This data was evaluated using the extended heat index, based on Steadman’s heat index, which combines air temperature and relative humidity to calculate a “feels-like temperature.”

The fact that the organization is able to act so decisively today is the result of a learning process over the past few years. “In 2022, we were caught off guard as an organization. At the time, we weren’t prepared for the impact a heat wave could have on an event like the 100KM Dodentocht,” recalls Brent Suykens, Head of Operations & Safety. “In the years that followed, we always had a Plan B ready, but since October of last year, we have worked with the emergency services to develop a formal heat response plan based on two parameters—temperature and humidity—with corresponding measures. This now provides us with a framework that allows us, on a scientific basis, to know where we stand as an organization a few days before the event begins.”

Awareness-raising measures

To mitigate the effects of the heat as effectively as possible, the organization is implementing the following measures, among others:

Additional communications to participants with recommended precautions against the heat.

Residents along the route are being asked via social media to help walkers cool off (for example, with buckets of water, sponges, or garden hoses).

During the event, standard messages will be broadcast to participants and visitors via the public address system and LED screens.

Our volunteers and emergency services will receive a briefing on the signs of heat stress so that, if necessary, they can intervene in a timely manner.

Additional water stations will be set up to ensure that water is available at least every 10 km. Extra water will also be provided at the finish line.

Starting at 6:00 p.m., the Red Cross will reinforce the teams at the starting area with an additional ambulance and two extra teams.

The number of treatments for dehydration is tracked so that adjustments can be made quickly when necessary.

Participants experiencing heat stress are asked to report it.

What can you do yourself?

Drink water regularly and in a timely manner, even if you aren’t thirsty yet.
Apply sunscreen and wear a hat.

Recognize the signs of heat stress in yourself: dizziness, headache, nausea, extreme fatigue, or confusion.
If you notice symptoms of heat stress in yourself, report them to the Red Cross or our staff. They’re ready to help you and will work with you to decide what to do next.

Take advantage of the refreshment stations set up by residents along the route.

Due to the persistently warm temperatures of the past few weeks and the expected heat in the coming days, we are taking additional precautions to ensure the safety of participants and volunteers.
