Dear,

 

First of all we would like to thank everyone who took up the challenge and each one of you that helped to make this 48th edition of the International 100 Km Dodentocht a success!!!

It has not been an easy edition with lots of changes, that might have caused some problems here and there this year. However these changes were necessary and desirable towards the future.

As of now we only accept online preregistrations, this in order to be able to prepare ourselves well based on the exact number of participants. This year we still spent too much time dealing with people who wanted to register even after July 15th, even though we had gone through a lot of trouble getting everyone informed via as many channels as possible. We knew it would be difficult, but the decision has to be taken at some point. We realize that also next year there will be walkers that will be too late in registering. However on the other hand: we do expect people to inform themselves before participating in such a big event!

Also shifting the big checkpoint “halfway” from Steenhuffel to Merchtem has not been an easy decision, but in the end it wasn’t all that bad. And now we have a full year to improve or change everything. A big thank you to everyone who also contributed to this!

Also the Red Cross underwent some changes. Dealing with such a huge number of participants it is merely impossible to give each walker a massage. Actually this is a kind of luxury that is not inherent of walking events. And if you have to make a choice, then we obviously prioritize medical care and first aid.

The big majority of our walkers has, despite maybe some minor errors, enjoyed the event. They have confirmed so afterwards: you cannot imagine how good this feels! Thank you so much!!

And of course we are open to criticism and improvement. Thanks to this feedback we have been able to evolve to today’s Dodentocht. Of course there is always room for improvement, but expanding details to serious problems is not fair and unnecessary. It’s particularly unfair towards the more than 100 board members, the more than 200 security people and the more than 1300 volunteers who do everything they can to make each edition a success. We are all volunteers who put their heart and soul into the organization in their spare time. This is something some people tend to forget!

Despite the fact that only online preregistrations were possible, we again broke a record in terms of number of participants: it was even the biggest increase since we started in 1970! We know and notice that we are at our maximum, that the streets are full, that even sports halls become too small, that our volunteers have reached their limit. So this subject will certainly be on the table during the coming evaluation meetings.

This year we are one step closer to our 50th anniversary in 2019, which should become a big party, as unseen before! Any ideas and propositions are more than welcome!!!
