The primary task of the Field Department is designing the route. This involves more than merely looking for beautiful places to hike. When designing the route, the Field Department considers the weaker elements of the previous route, possible roadwork during the Dodentocht weekend, and, of course, the safety of the hikers. Naturally, this all takes place in close consultation with municipalities, police departments, and technical departments.Â
This department places the signs for the 100 km Dodentocht in the days leading up to the event. The Field Department opens and closes the checkpoints during the event. This ensures a fair and correct hike. The volunteers of the Field Department accompany the last hiker from the 50 km checkpoint and are the last to leave ‘their’ route in this capacity.Â
